Plan for a short film

PRE-PRODUCTION – THEORY

What type of production is this and how does my choice affect my planning?
Starting with an initial idea, can be a good starting point when you're considering making a film as it will help you plan forward the script and storyboard. Ect. For example, when I created the idea for my movie I knew how to format my script and storyboard just from looking back at my idea. In addition to, this I knew this could affect my planning as I had to use two editing techniques, which I have just recently started researching and learning about - these techniques are Montage and Continuity editing. Why I chose a film production is because I think a film produces more meaning and tension for the type of genre I have chosen.

What is continuity editing?
Best known for the 180 rule, Continuity editing is the sequence of shots, which can suggest an event. An example can be a woman glancing over a room in surprise. Also, editing like this also shows what their audiences would want to see when they want to see it.

What is the 180 Degree rule?
These two photos show the 180-degree rule from the camera. As you can see the camera is appearing over both of the men shoulders, which normally shows what they're encountering.

What is a film script?
A film script is a document that shows the cast and crew what they need to say, how to say it, and what they need to do when filming.

What is a script breakdown?

Script breakdowns, breakdown the film scripts into different categories, which normally are the weather, props, costumes, and cast used in a film.
What is a Storyboard?
Storyboards are quick visual drawings of what a film will look like when finished and they also show the types of camera shot, which will be used and dialogue. Etc.

What is a budget form?
In the film industry, a budget form shows the prices of equipment used during shooting - the different prices of equipment you will see on budget forms are clothing, props, camera equipment, and Lighting. Etc.

What is a film call sheet?
The call sheet is a document that shows contact information of the cast and crew. The type of information you would find in call sheets is contact information such as; mobile/phone number, and addresses. Etc.

What is a risk assessment?
A risk assessment shows the cast/crew what types of risks and hazards that will be at a location, for example; Explosions and wires/cables.

What is a clearance and contract document form?
Clearances and contracts are forms of a document that shows that the director is in charge of the cast/crew and, which they have to do what he/she tells them to do or tells them where to be. It also shows how long the cast and crew have with a production.

Steps Two – Time
How will you manage time and what documents will help you do this?
When I started on my practical for my assignment, I decided I wanted a short film production. Why I chose a film production is because I think a film produces more meaning and tension for my type of genre.

Step Three – Resources
How will you work out what resources you need and what documents will you need?
Pre-production documents like the script, script breakdowns, and call sheets help me know what resources I need, as they identify what props, Etc, will be at the location where I will film my short movie.

Different resources examples;

  1. Props
  2. Actors
  3. Locations
  4. Camera
  5. Sound equipment.
Step Four - Budget
How will I manage the budget for your short film?
When managing my budget, I will use the pre-production documents that are the budget form and script breakdown. In this case, these documents show information about the equipment and resources used at my location and how much they cost.

Step Five – Communication
How will I communicate with the people I am working with
How I will communicate with my crew and cast is through pre-production documentations, which are call sheets, scripts, and storyboards. These documentations contain contact information like; addresses and Mobile numbers, and show me who I will need to contact for example; when it comes to filming.

First example; My production Storyboard & script for my short film.

Like I have said before a storyboard will show me the different cast and crew that I will have to contact before filming. However, this can also be used for the script too.

Second example; Call Sheet;

A call she will let me communicate with my cast and crew like the script, and storyboard, but in a different way. What I mean by this is the call sheet carries all the contact information, which I look at after seeing who I need to contact on other pre-production documents first.

What is your short film about?
Shannon is in the living room unaware she is in the presence of an unknown entity, she is unable to see. As she watches the TV, everything seems okay until unexplainably turns off with no explanation, and as she walks over to see the what the problem has she finally realised the problem - the plug had been pulled out of its socket. Succeedingly she is distracted by a voice that appears behind her calling her out by name. In a result, of leaving the room, an apparition walks behind her crossing from one room to the next. Meanwhile, while getting closer to the stairs, the atmosphere became deeper and tense that also made Shannon feel uncomfortable Then as her phone rings the feeling she felt previously disappeared.

How should my film be shot?

When filming, my one-minute movie I knew I needed to use continuity editing. When using continuity editing, I took many camera shots over Shannon's shoulders to show what she was seeing, and as a result, I also took shots of Shannon's face, which not only shows you what she thought she was encountering but also how she felt physically and emotionally.

Step Six - Clearance and Contracts

How I ensure that I have the right legal permission to broadcast my film?
Ensuring permission for my film, I am going to use two pre-production documents, that are the Clearance and Contract forms. Additionally, the way these forms show permission grants are through companies signatures, and the difference between these two documents is that one is for locations and other cast and crew.

To get permission from a location I will use the location clearance form, which shows people like the police that me and my crew have been given permisson to shoot at a location. Simarly, Like clearance, contacts are used for cast and crews employment and show how long someone will be working for the production team. So in that case, I will use this document only for my actress -Shannon.
